Assisted Living is a residential option that provides housing, meals, supervision, and personal care services to older adults who need help with routine activities of daily living (ADLs).

    • Ideal Resident: A senior who is no longer safe or able to manage daily life independently (e.g., preparing meals, keeping house, bathing safely) but does not require 24-hour skilled nursing care.

The core services included in an Assisted Living base fee are designed for convenience, safety, and daily support:

    • Personal Care: Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, grooming, and walking.
    • Dining: Three prepared meals per day, usually served in a communal, restaurant-style dining room.
    • Housekeeping & Laundry: Regular cleaning of the apartment and linen/personal laundry services.
    • Safety & Security: 24-hour staff supervision and emergency call systems in each unit.
    • Activities: A full schedule of social, recreational, and wellness programs.

Feature Assisted Living (AL) Skilled Nursing Facility (Nursing Home)
Focus Lifestyle, independence, and assistance with ADLs. 24-hour medical care and rehabilitation.
Housing Private apartment/suite with lockable door and private bath. Shared or private institutional-style room.
Staffing Caregivers, medication aides, and usually a nurse on-site or on-call. Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) available 24/7.
Typical Stay Long-term residency. Short-term rehab or long-term high-acuity medical care.

Assisted Living costs vary significantly by location and the level of care required.

    • National Median Cost: The national median cost is generally around $5,500 – $6,500 per month (Note: this figure changes yearly and varies widely by state).
    • Pricing Structure: Most communities use one of three models:
      • All-Inclusive: One set fee covers rent and all care services.
      • Tiered/Level of Care: The fee is based on a structured level (Level 1, 2, 3) corresponding to the total time needed for assistance.
      • A La Carte: The base rent is separate, and specific services (e.g., medication management, bathing assistance) are billed individually.

Assisted Living is designed to accommodate mild to moderate increases in care needs (known as “aging in place”).

    • The community performs regular care assessments (usually quarterly or semi-annually).
    • If needs increase (e.g., more assistance with transfers is required), the resident’s Level of Care fee will increase to reflect the additional staff time.
    • However, if a resident’s needs exceed the facility’s license (e.g., they require IV therapy, a ventilator, or complex, unmanageable behaviors), the resident may need to transition to a Skilled Nursing Facility.

Yes. Most Assisted Living communities offer larger private suites or apartments designed to accommodate couples.

    • A second person fee is typically added to the monthly rent, which covers their meals, utilities, and access to amenities.
    • Care services are billed individually. For example, if only one spouse requires assistance with medication and bathing, only that spouse is charged the care fee.
